the band
The Manimals are not a cult- they’re just a regular New York City band teaching their acolytes how to find transcendence at the rock & roll gig, of course. They have been making uniquely genre-fluid music since 2011, but its hallmarks include big pop hooks, messy punk attitude, and glam rock spectacle. Inspired in equal parts by David Bowie and Kesha, horror movies and drag queens, myths and psychedelia, they live somewhere between deeply stupid and absolutely genuine. Led by the irrepressibly entertaining Haley Bowery (who is often covered in blood), The Manimals are a party and a queer fever dream wrapped in a messiah complex (but in a fun way!)
the song
Their new single “Detonate” is a power ballad that acts as a timed explosion: an introspection of one’s own worst tendencies that builds to a massive cathartic release as the song gives in to the overwhelming urge to regenerate. As a live band with a penchant for drama, this recording captures the whole spectrum of emotion behind The Manimals’ raucous exterior… not to mention, a really satisfying singalong bridge.
the video
The music video was shot on iPhone by Zoe Briskey, over the course of three hours as the sun set on the Jersey Shore. It stars frontwoman Haley Bowery on an existential journey through the elements on an empty beach, as she explores her own propensity for burning it all down and starting over.
